Class objectives

To learn about Japanese history and horticulture, and how museum exhibits should be presented.

Class content

An online program including both synchronous and asynchronous components was conducted for three weeks prior to a visit to Japan, to provide preliminary training in museum studies and Japanese history (ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern). In the session on Ancient Japanese History, students from the University of Cincinnati, the University of Alabama, and Chiba University began to interact on Moodle by viewing pre-learning materials supervised by instructors from the National Museum of Japanese History, and competing in quizzes on Zoom to test their learning outcomes in mixed groups of Japanese and American students. In the session on modern history, a question-and-answer session was held via Zoom in response to the lecturer's video lecture.

During practical training, students were encouraged to discuss the nature of the exhibition, and worked as a group on "planning a museum". Students exchanged opinions with museum staff on the nature of the exhibition at the National Museum of Japanese History.
